Applications of Expandable Graphite (1)

Release Date:

2020-03-21

Expandable graphite as a battery material utilizes the free energy change of the intercalation reaction of expandable graphite to convert into electrical energy. Typically, expandable graphite is used as the cathode and lithium as the anode, or expandable graphite compounded with silver oxide as the cathode and zinc as the anode. Fluorinated graphite, graphitic acid, and expandable graphite containing metal halides such as AuCl3 and TiF4 have been applied in batteries.

1. Sealing material: High-carbon graphite raw material is mixed with concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid for acidification treatment, followed by heat treatment and then compression molding. The flexible graphite prepared is a new type of high-performance sealing material. It is an in-situ grown nanomaterial. Compared with traditional sealing materials such as asbestos rubber, it has excellent properties such as good compressibility, resilience, self-adhesion, and low density. Moreover, it can be used for a long time under harsh working conditions such as high temperature and high corrosion. Graphite sheets and sealing components made from it are widely used in aerospace, machinery, electronics, nuclear energy, petrochemical, electric power, shipbuilding, metallurgy and other industries. Because of its excellent properties such as light weight, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, high temperature resistance, acid and alkali corrosion resistance, good resilience, lubricity, plasticity, and chemical stability, it is known as the "King of Seals" in the world.
2. Environmental protection field: Obtained through high-temperature expansion, Expandable graphite has a rich pore structure and thus excellent adsorption performance, so it has wide applications in environmental protection and biomedicine. The pore structure of expandable graphite includes two types: open pores and closed pores. The pore volume accounts for about 98%, mainly composed of macropores, with a pore size distribution ranging from 1 to 10.3 nm. Because it is mainly composed of macropores and mesopores, its adsorption characteristics differ from microporous materials such as activated carbon. It is suitable for liquid phase adsorption but not for gas phase adsorption. In liquid phase adsorption, it is oleophilic and hydrophobic; 1 g Expandable graphite can adsorb over 80 g of heavy oil, making it a promising environmental material for removing oil pollution from water surfaces. In wastewater treatment for chemical enterprises, microbial (bacterial) treatment is often employed. Expandable graphite is an excellent microbial carrier, especially in the treatment of water contaminated by oily organic macromolecules, due to its good chemical stability and regenerability for reuse, thus showing good application prospects.
3. Medicine: Due to its adsorption characteristics for organic and biological macromolecules, expandable graphite has broad application prospects in biomedical materials.
4. High-energy battery materials: Expandable graphite As a battery material, expandable graphite utilizes the free energy change of its interlayer reactions to convert into electrical energy. Typically, expandable graphite is used as the cathode and lithium as the anode, or expandable graphite compounded with silver oxide as the cathode and zinc as the anode. Expandable graphite of metal halides such as fluorinated graphite, graphitic acid, AuCl3, and TiF4 has been applied in batteries.
